At The Kiggins Theatre, Nocturnal Worlds explores what the brain is doing while we sleep, from the synchronized rhythms of deep rest to the lively REM cycles that resemble wakefulness even as the body stays still. Artist Kindra Crick has spent years investigating the ties between sleep and memory. In 2024 she began wearing a portable EEG each night and keeping a detailed dream and sleep journal, while collaborating with researchers studying circadian timing, the claustrum’s role in coordinating slow waves, and a sleep physician focused on midlife sleep disruption. Drawing on this work, Crick presents figurative paintings shaped by her own sleep data, illuminating deep sleep, REM, and bouts of insomnia. The event invites a fresh look at the hidden nighttime processes that help memories form, shares perspectives on why some scientists compare REM to therapy that happens during sleep, and offers a few practical ideas for calming a 3 a.m. thought loop. Crick creates at the intersection of art and neuroscience, with work held in public collections including the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, Princeton University, and the Jordan Schnitzer Collection, and she is based in Portland with artwork on view at Waterstone Gallery.

8 PMThe Sound Healing Symphony at the World Forestry CenterWorld Forestry Center, PortlandHealth & Wellness

At the World Forestry Center in Portland, the country’s largest sound bath gathering brings together world-class meditative musicians for an immersive evening of sound designed to ease the mind and body. Participants recline while waves of tone from gongs, crystal and Tibetan singing bowls, Native American flutes, didgeridoo, Celtic harp, monochord, vibraphone and more fill the space, creating a deeply soothing, almost dreamlike atmosphere. The experience takes place indoors, with gardens just outside. Presented by Sound Meditation Presents, a nonprofit focused on making the healing power of sound accessible through concerts, education and a sound bath app, this program grows from a decade of work that includes 185 performances for more than 60,000 people, with plans to expand nationwide next year. Sound meditation, also known as sound healing or a sound bath, uses gentle, resonant tones to invite profound relaxation and clarity, and can be especially supportive for those who find traditional meditation difficult. The symphony is conducted by Guy Douglas, a longtime gong master and sound healing practitioner who performs on singing bowls and gongs and serves as an executive director of the organization. The ensemble features Russell Feingold on didgeridoo and Native American flute, a shamanic sound healer and author with decades of experience in Peruvian shamanism and holistic practices. Harpist Matthew Tutsky appears as principal with the Oregon Symphony, Portland Opera and Oregon Ballet Theatre. Cellist Elizabeth Byrd trained at Juilliard, has performed with major ensembles including the Metropolitan Opera and the London Festival Orchestra, and helped pioneer Tonal Vibration Therapy with Dr. John Upledger before founding the Academy of Cello Sound Healing. Vocalist Jeffri Lynn Carrington brings classical training and international performance experience. Simona Asinovski performs on monolina and vibraphone and, as an executive director of the organization, focuses on sharing this practice of deep rest and restoration. Guests are encouraged to wear warm, comfortable clothing and to bring a water bottle, a yoga mat and a blanket, with an optional pillow to create a cozy setup that supports deeper relaxation. 11 PMAmélie FarrenHolocene, PortlandMusic

Part of The Three Wishes Tour, this Portland show brings together Amélie Farren, Lilith Max, and Rabbitology for a showcase of narrative-driven music. Amélie crafts alt-folk and alt-pop that captures vivid, close-up moments; her releases range from the widely streamed suffering and Unsweetened Lemonade to the album Airheaded, produced by Michael Keenan in Los Angeles, and the EP Infanescence, which reflects on how time reshapes a person. Lilith Max blends fantasy folk with tales of knights, myths, and magic, drawing on German folklore and pairing dance-ready rhythms with lyrics that confront themes such as female rage, social pressure, climate change, and inner struggle. With a background in acting, her performances carry a cinematic flair, full of motion and shifting intensity. Rabbitology, the project of Nat Timmerman, invites listeners into an eccentric sonic world where personal memoir becomes fantastical short stories and eclectic textures lead the way. Together, these artists create an imaginative journey centered on storytelling, emotion, and atmosphere.

Art historian and curator David F. Martin shares a far-reaching look at LGBTQ artists whose work helped shape the visual culture of Washington State and the wider Pacific Northwest. Presented by the Clark County Historical Museum as the final installment of the History on Tap series, this talk takes place at the historic Old Liberty Theater in Ridgefield. Drawing on more than three decades of original research that culminated in his book and exhibition The Lavender Palette: Gay Culture and the Art of Washington State, Martin traces contributions beginning in the 1910s and restores attention to trailblazing gay and lesbian artists who have often been overlooked. He brings together artworks, photographs, and archival materials with stories gathered through relationships with artists, their families, and descendants, offering insights supported by previously unpublished images and biographical details. The Lavender Palette includes essays and profiles of thirteen artists and considers how they navigated identity and career while enriching the state’s artistic life. Martin serves as Curator for the Cascadia Art Museum and is recognized for extensive scholarship on historically underrepresented artists active between 1880 and 1970, along with numerous publications and lectures in the United States and Europe.
